Job Responsibilities
The Paralegal for the Office of the Chief Staff Attorney is responsible for delivering paralegal assistance to Staff Attorneys in the preparation of appeals for judicial review and resolution. This role involves managing cases during the petition phase of the appeal process: receiving assigned cases from the Clerk's Office, organizing and assigning cases for Court presentation, coordinating, scheduling, and overseeing the Court's Writ Panel dockets, and ensuring timely reporting of dispositions to the Clerk's Office.
Additionally, the Paralegal will maintain case flow through the case management system and facilitate communication with the Clerk's Office.
Research and Administrative Support
Provide research and administrative assistance as directed by the Chief Staff Attorney. This includes aiding in the procedural review of appeals and presenting requests for continuance and motions to the Court.
Training and Development
Assist in the orientation and training of new attorneys and interns regarding office procedures, computer applications, and Court rules and requirements.
Benefits
This position comes with a competitive benefits package, including vacation and sick leave, 12 paid holidays, health insurance, retirement plans, life insurance, deferred compensation, and both short- and long-term disability coverage.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should possess a competent working knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, case management systems, and document management systems. Familiarity with appellate rules and regulations is advantageous.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, proficiency in time management, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively are essential. Candidates must demonstrate efficiency in a fast-paced environment, the capability to adjust priorities with minimal supervision, and effective interaction with Court personnel and the public.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required, along with a solid understanding of databases, cite-checking, Lexis, and other legal research tools.
Additional Considerations
A bachelor's degree or a paralegal certificate is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the necessary qualifications may be accepted in lieu of formal education.
Application Process
Applicants will receive confirmation of receipt upon successful submission of their application and/or résumé. Please refer to your account to monitor the status of your application for this position.
A résumé, cover letter, and references are required for consideration.
Inclusivity Commitment
The Commonwealth is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment and encourages individuals with disabilities to apply through the Commonwealth Alternative Hiring Process. To be considered, applicants must provide their AHP Letter from the appropriate department.
