This announcement is intended to fill the role of a Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistant within the Hawaii State Department of Education.
Compensation:
Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistant, SR-11: $3,318.00 per month.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as a bridge to foster collaboration and understanding between parents and educational staff.
- Assist in addressing and resolving educational challenges faced by students.
- Share relevant project information with stakeholders.
- Clarify school programs, policies, and procedures to parents; translate and communicate parental concerns to school personnel.
- Identify community resources and maintain a comprehensive resource file; recommend various resources to assist parents with their challenges.
- Encourage parental involvement in school activities and suggest community members with special skills as classroom resource persons.
- Facilitate the organization of Parent Advisory Groups and promote active parental participation.
- Support the planning and development of initiatives aimed at enhancing parent engagement in school-related activities.
- Organize and/or conduct informational sessions for parents to raise awareness and interest.
- Assist in translating information regarding various social and health programs.
- Participate in training programs and prepare activity reports.
Applicants must possess general work experience that demonstrates the following abilities:
- Ability to comprehend and explain materials related to educational programs.
- Skill in establishing rapport with individuals and groups to encourage participation.
- Effective communication skills to engage with individuals and gather pertinent information.
- Experience in planning and conducting group information sessions.
- Capability to prepare detailed activity reports.
- Aptitude for recognizing and addressing basic individual human needs.
Applicants must have at least one year of experience that provides knowledge and skills in:
- Understanding of Marshallese culture, gained through daily living activities within these communities.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the Marshallese language.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships within Marshallese communities.
Some positions may require a valid motor vehicle operator's license to drive in the State of Hawaii.
Substitutions Allowed:
- Completion of a one-year Human Services Curriculum leading to a certificate of achievement at an accredited community college, including field experience, may substitute for one year of general experience.
- Completion of a two-year Human Services Curriculum leading to a degree at an accredited community college, including field experience, may substitute for the general experience requirement.
- Partial completion of a Human Services Curriculum at an accredited community college, including field experience, may substitute for general experience on a month-for-month basis.
Possession of the required years of experience does not automatically qualify an applicant for the position. The applicant's overall experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position effectively.
Requirements:
Applicants must meet all position requirements as of the application date. Education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Experience calculation is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks, with part-time experience pro-rated.
