Position Overview:
This opportunity is aimed at filling the role of a Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistant within the Hawaii State Department of Education.

Compensation:
The monthly salary for this position is $3,318.00.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Act as a bridge to foster collaboration and understanding between families and educational staff.
  2. Assist in addressing and resolving educational challenges faced by students.
  3. Share relevant project information with stakeholders.
  4. Clarify school programs, policies, and procedures to families; translate and communicate parental concerns to school personnel.
  5. Identify community resources and maintain a comprehensive directory; recommend various resources to assist families.
  6. Encourage community members with specialized skills to contribute as resource persons in educational settings.
  7. Promote parental involvement in school events and activities.
  8. Support the formation of Parent Advisory Groups and motivate family participation.
  9. Help in the planning and execution of initiatives aimed at increasing family engagement in school-related activities.
  10. Organize and/or facilitate informational sessions for families.
  11. Assist in translating information regarding various social and health programs.
  12. Engage in training programs and prepare reports on activities.
Experience Requirements:
Applicants must possess a minimum of two years of paid or volunteer experience working with individuals and groups, demonstrating the following abilities:
  1. Comprehend and articulate various materials related to educational programs.
  2. Build and sustain rapport with individuals and groups, encouraging participation in activities.
  3. Communicate effectively with diverse audiences to gather pertinent information.
  4. Plan and lead group information sessions.
  5. Compile and present activity reports.
  6. Recognize and address fundamental human needs.
Specialized Experience:
Additionally, candidates must have at least one year of experience that has equipped them with the following knowledge and skills:
  1. Understanding of Marshallese culture, acquired through active participation in community life.
  2. Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the Marshallese language.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain relationships within Marshallese communities.
License Requirement:
Some positions may require a valid motor vehicle operator's license to drive in the State of Hawaii.

Substitutions:
Specific educational achievements may substitute for general experience:
  1. Completion of a one-year Human Services Curriculum leading to a certificate of achievement, including field experience, may substitute for one year of general experience.
  2. Completion of a two-year Human Services Curriculum leading to a degree, including field experience, may substitute for the general experience requirement.
  3. Partial completion of a Human Services Curriculum may substitute for general experience on a month-for-month basis.
Quality of Experience:
Meeting the minimum experience requirements does not guarantee qualification; overall experience must demonstrate the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
