Job Summary

The Hawaii State Department of Education seeks a highly skilled and culturally sensitive individual to fill the position of Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistant. This role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including parents, students, and school staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a liaison between parents and school staff to promote cooperation and understanding.
  • Assist in solving students' educational and related problems.
  • Disseminate project information and explain school programs, policies, and procedures to parents.
  • Translate and relate parents' concerns to project and school staff.
  • Seek community resources and maintain a file of these resources.
  • Suggest various resources to assist parents with their problems.
  • Encourage parents to participate in school activities.
  • Assist in organizing Parent Advisory Groups and encourage parents to participate.
  • Assist in planning and developing projects to increase parent participation in school-related activities.
  • Plan for and/or conduct information and interest sessions for parents.
  • Assist in translating information on various social and health programs.
Requirements

Applicants must have at least two years of paid or volunteer work experience in which they worked with individuals and groups, possessing the ability to understand and explain various materials related to the program/project/activity, establish and maintain rapport with individuals and groups, speak effectively with individuals and groups, plan and conduct group information sessions, prepare activity reports, and recognize and identify basic individual human needs.

In addition, applicants must have at least one year's experience that provided the knowledge and skills to work with Marshallese communities, including knowledge of Marshallese culture, ability to speak, read, write, and understand Marshallese language, and ability to establish and maintain rapport with Marshallese communities.

Some positions may require possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license to drive in the State of Hawaii.

Temporary Assignment (TA) experience may be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below:

  • A copy of the applicant's TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report.
  • A signed letter from the applicant's supervisor that includes the applicant's name, his/her TA job title, the TA start and end dates, his/her specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours worked per week or total TA hours worked.
  • Copies of the applicant's signed SF-10 Forms.
