MedStar Health is seeking a skilled Coding Specialist I to join our team in the Facility Outpatient Coding Operations department. As a Coding Specialist, you will code and abstract primarily Emergency Department, Observation, and other outpatient records using ICD-10-CM, and other applicable patient classification schemes. You will also perform beginning-level Ambulatory Surgery coding.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Abstracting and ensuring accuracy of diagnoses, procedure, patient demographics, and other required data elements.
  • Adhering to all compliance regulations and maintaining annual compliance education.
  • Contacting physicians when conflicting or ambiguous information appears in the medical record.
  • Resolving quality reviews in a timely manner.
  • Reviewing medical record documentation to identify diagnoses and procedures, and assigning correct diagnostic, procedural codes, and modifiers.

Qualifications include:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in coding-related fields preferred.
  • Courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, ICD-CM, and CPT-4 required.
  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCA (Certified Coding Associate), or other coding certification credentials within 1 year required.
  • Coding experience and experience with clinical information systems (3M grouper, electronic medical records, computer-assisted coding) preferred.
