Position Overview

The Intensive Care Unit at DCH Health System is dedicated to delivering exceptional care for adult patients with surgical, medical, and cardiac needs. Our unit features 8 beds, all visible from a centrally located nurse's station, fostering a collaborative environment where nurses can refine their critical care skills. With a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1 to 1:2, based on patient acuity, our Registered Nurses also play a vital role in house-wide Rapid Response and Code Blue Team operations. Our commitment is to ensure a comfortable and secure experience for our patients.

Key Responsibilities

As a Registered Nurse, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering high-quality, compassionate care while adhering to professional nursing standards and fostering positive therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. Your duties will include:
  1. Conducting comprehensive assessments of each assigned patient upon admission and continuously thereafter, addressing their physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and cultural needs, as well as pain management and discharge planning.
  2. Providing and documenting education for patients and significant others, tailored to their physical, behavioral, psychological, and developmental needs while identifying any barriers to learning.
  3. Regularly evaluating patient care and collaborating with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve optimal patient-centered outcomes.
  4. Delegating nursing tasks to team members according to patient needs and team capabilities.
  5. Implementing safety protocols during patient care.
  6. Maintaining accurate documentation of observations, care provided, and modifications to care plans.
  7. Delivering precise handoff reports and engaging in unit-based discussions.
  8. Participating in performance improvement initiatives by contributing to PI teams and supporting necessary changes for enhancement.
  9. Completing initial and annual competency assessments as required by job classification.

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Possession of a current RN license in Alabama.
  • Completion of American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training.
  • Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English proficiently.
Certifications Required:

  • Acute Care - Current AHA BLS certification.
  • Cardiac/Critical Care - Current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS certifications.
  • Emergency Department - Current AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certifications.
  • Perioperative - Current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS certifications.
  • PACU - AHA PALS certification required.
  • Rehab - Current AHA BLS certification.
  • Women's/Children - Current AHA BLS certification.
  • NICU - Current AHA Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and STABLE Program certifications.
  • Labor & Delivery - Current AHA ACLS, AHA NRP, and Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certifications.
  • Mother Baby Unit - Current AHA NRP and STABLE Program certifications.
  • Pediatrics - Current AHA PALS certification.
  • Clinical Support - Current AHA BLS certification.
  • Cardiac Monitoring Unit - Current AHA ACLS certification.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit, and stoop.
  • Ability to run in emergencies.
  • Must exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, and carry objects.
