Job Summary

As a Phlebotomy Team Leader Evening Shift at Brigham & Women's Hospital (BWH), you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our phlebotomy services during evening hours. This position requires a skilled and experienced phlebotomist who can lead a team, troubleshoot problems, and provide excellent customer service to patients and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of phlebotomists during evening shifts, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery.
  • Troubleshoot problems and follow up as necessary to ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Assist the supervisor with administrative tasks, such as scheduling, orientation, training, and competency assessment.
  • Provide oversight in the absence of the supervisor on weekends and holidays.
  • Make changes to the schedule as necessary to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Use sound judgment in handling problems and notify the supervisor or manager as appropriate.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist the supervisor in the orientation and training of new employees, ensuring all orientation and competency paperwork is complete and accurate.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities of a phlebotomist, including venipunctures on difficult patients when phlebotomists are not able to obtain samples.
  • Identify patients according to department policies and procedures.
  • Collect appropriate vacutainer tubes and maintain stability as necessary.
  • Properly retrieve electronic orders from Collection Manager and Epic as necessary.
  • Follow all directions applicable to research protocols.
  • Use proper phlebotomy technique and isolation procedures as required.
  • Communicate necessary information concerning patients and patient specimens to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Follow all Infection Control guidelines.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • National certification (e.g., ASCP or ASPT) preferred.
  • At least three years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform routine and STAT venipuncture on adults and babies, as well as difficult patients.
Skills and Abilities
  • Requires knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
  • Ability to perform more difficult venipunctures.
  • Requires basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of veins and neonates' heels.
  • Required ability to interpret electronic orders or lab requisition and select appropriate vacutainer tube(s) for collection.
  • Standing and walking for 90% of the time and some physical effort to transport supplies and specimens.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge of Windows, Outlook, Epic, Collection Manager, and Sunquest.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a senior member of the laboratory team and to assume oversight in the absence of supervisor.
  • Must demonstrate sound judgment.
  • Must have the ability to interact with physicians, nurses, and coordinators on nursing units.
  • Must have the ability to interact with patients and their families.
Working Conditions
  • Extremely busy work environment.
  • Potential exposure to needle sticks and punctures from other sharps.
  • Exposure to patients with infectious diseases. Must take appropriate precautions according to Infection Control and laboratory guidelines.
  • Required weekend and holiday rotation according to the needs of the department.
  • Rotation in all labs required when needed.
