Laboratory Skills Trainer

Location: Philadelphia, PA/Camden, NJ OR IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY AREA

About the Role:

The Laboratory Skills Trainer works under the direction of the Program Director. Teaches theory and practical applications using instructional methods and teaching skills in the classroom, clinical practicum, simulation and skills laboratory tracking. Primary functions include:

  • Student attendance and progress monitoring.
  • Setting educational objectives for students.
  • Ongoing mentoring and attention to continued student needs.
  • Maintaining a satisfactory working relationship with students, faculty, and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Classroom Skills Instruction:

  • Teach assigned classes using prescribed courses of study with established texts and/or materials.
  • Ensure classroom maintenance in good physical order.
  • Supervise students in a laboratory and/or clinical setting for respective course(s).
  • Review and order proper medical supplies for laboratory experience.
  • Provide hands-on instruction via demonstration.
  • Evaluate competency by assessing learning through return demonstrations.
  • Sign, date, and provide feedback for each student skills checklist as required.
  • Manage simulation scenarios and evaluate student responses.
  • CPR instruction according to American Heart Association guidelines.

Medical Assisting Skills:

  • Patient communication and human relations.
  • Phlebotomy (venous, capillary draws, centrifuge).
  • ECG and Peak Flow Monitoring.
  • Suture removal.
  • Injections (subcutaneous, intradermal, intramuscular).
  • Obtaining vital signs and measurements (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse, pulse oximetry).
  • Triage, critical thinking, and patient documentation.
  • Perform point-of-care testing (HCG, Mono, Strep, Urinalysis, Blood Glucose, Hematocrit).
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens for transport.
  • Assistance with general and specialized examinations (i.e., gynecological exams).
  • CPR (Basic Life Support-Provider).
  • Sterile instrument decontamination, wrapping, and sterilization.
  • Medication Administration (various routes, buffering/reconstitution of medications for injections).
  • Aseptic and Sterile Technique (handwashing, decontamination).
  • PPE use, maintenance, and disposal.
  • Safety, Biohazard waste disposal, and sharps management.
  • Mandated reporting of communicable disease.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate must possess:

  • Degree or post-secondary education meeting state (TWC) and ABHES accreditation requirements.
  • Minimum 3-5 years' practical experience, with teaching experience preferred.
  • Current certification, registration, and/or licensure as a Medical Assistant, Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Registered Nurse (RN), Medical Doctor (M.D.).
  • Current Basic Life Support Provider-Instructor Certification through the American Heart Association.

Estimated Salary Range:

$65,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
