Position Overview

Battelle's Defense and Materials Solutions (DMS) Business Line is in search of an Optical Systems Physicist or Engineer based in Columbus, Ohio. The selected candidate will lead and implement projects focused on the design and development of electro-optical sensors and emitters, with a strong emphasis on creating instrumentation for analyzing optical phenomena and material characteristics. This role requires a proactive approach to system development and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment, whether working independently or as part of a small team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the design and development of systems from initial feasibility studies through to production.
  • Conduct simulations at varying resolutions to validate concepts and establish manufacturing specifications.
  • Prepare comprehensive documentation and procedural guidelines throughout the development process.
  • Engage in laboratory activities, including optical bench setups, prototype integration, and handling of chemical or biological materials.
  • Innovate sensor systems aimed at detecting hazardous materials, including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive threats.
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate developmental sensor systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to transition prototypes into market-ready products.
  • Support data interpretation and analysis, contributing to the development of automated analysis algorithms.
  • Manage project timelines and direct tasks to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Generate reports, test plans, presentations, and other essential documentation.
  • Potential for occasional travel to remote locations for field testing.

Essential Qualifications

  • Master's degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of four years of research experience.
  • Proven experience in the experimental development and testing of analytical instrumentation, including spectrometry and spectroscopy.
  • Familiarity with laser technology and light-emitting diode systems.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in managing large or complex datasets.
  • Experience in designing and executing unique laboratory or field tests.
  • Expertise in developing electro-optical systems for challenging environmental conditions.
  • Proficient in processing quantitative datasets and utilizing analytical software tools (e.g., Matlab, R, Python, C#, LabVIEW).
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications for reporting and presentations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, such as Creo, SolidWorks, or Zemax OpticStudio.
  • At least eight years of research experience.
  • Experience with U.S. Department of Defense contracts.
