Role Summary

The Fiber Optic Installation Assistant plays a vital role in supporting seasoned fiber splicers in the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic communication systems. This position involves preparing and organizing equipment, assisting with cable routing, maintaining documentation, and ensuring a safe and efficient work environment.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in telecommunications fiber work, including:
    • Experience with ladder handling and climbing
    • Familiarity with live fiber environments
    • Ability to read Fiber MDF in Central Offices
    • Experience working in telephone company manholes
  • Must have a personal work truck capable of carrying a 28' ladder (per diem provided for vehicle use)
  • Valid state driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts, including potential overtime and night shifts
  • Willingness to travel and stay in hotels throughout the state
Key Responsibilities
  1. Equipment Preparation: Assist in organizing and preparing the necessary tools and materials for fiber optic splicing and installation tasks.
  2. Cable Routing: Support the routing and pulling of fiber optic cables in various settings, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  3. Cable Stripping and Preparation: Aid in stripping and preparing fiber optic cables for splicing, ensuring clean and precise cable ends.
  4. Splice Closure Assembly: Assist in the assembly and preparation of splice closures, ensuring they are ready for splicing and protected from environmental factors.
  5. Fiber Splicing: Learn from experienced splicers and assist in the process of fusing and mechanically splicing fiber optic cables.
  6. Testing and Troubleshooting: Support the team in conducting basic tests and troubleshooting activities on spliced fibers.
  7. Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols to maintain a secure work environment.
  8. Documentation: Help maintain accurate records of work completed, including splicing logs and project progress.
  9. Site Cleanup: Ensure work areas are clean and organized after task completion.
