Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Sergeant/Duty Command, the role involves ensuring the physical security of SCPA facilities; safeguarding individuals and property; maintaining public order; and preventing incidents such as fires, theft, vandalism, and other unlawful activities. The officer must fully comprehend and enforce the security protocols outlined in the Facility Security Plan (FSP) and adhere to the laws of the State of South Carolina. This position may require assignment to various SCPA facilities with flexible shifts.

Key Responsibilities

Security Duties
  • Possess knowledge and demonstrate proficiency in security measures as specified in 33 CFR.
  • Conduct regular patrols of facilities in accordance with the approved FSP, ensuring documentation of patrols and reporting any concerns to the Duty Supervisor.
  • Assist in managing access control at entry points as per the approved FSP.
  • Facilitate traffic control to ensure smooth operations.
Enforcement Duties
  • Uphold the laws of South Carolina and enforce the security requirements of the approved FSP as per 33 CFR 105.
  • Conduct screenings as mandated in the FSP to identify and deter hazardous materials and devices.
  • Prevent unauthorized access to facilities.
  • Enforce Transportation Worker Identification Card standards.
  • Regulate parking and issue citations when necessary.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance and inspections on assigned equipment and SCPA assets, including vehicles and weapons, completing necessary documentation in accordance with 33 CFR.
  • Fill in on any post assignment as directed.
  • Participate in departmental training sessions.
  • Assist with the docking and departure of vessels, ensuring all paperwork is completed.
  • Other duties as assigned; this job description does not encompass all responsibilities that may be required by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as an officer through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) in good standing, with annual proficiency maintenance.
  • A valid South Carolina driver's license is necessary for operating Ports Authority vehicles.
Skills and Competencies

Basic computer proficiency is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional appearance, strong communication skills, good character, and the ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License with a clean record over the past five years.
  • No felony convictions as per FBI or SLED records.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, night shifts, and holidays, with potential for short notice changes.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and exert the physical strength necessary for law enforcement duties, including defensive tactics and lifting over 50 pounds. Officers must consistently meet the following physical standards:
    • Run/Walk 1 mile in 15 minutes or less;
    • Complete 15 pushups in 1 minute;
    • Complete 15 sit-ups in 1 minute;
    • Drag 150 pounds a distance of 25 feet.
