Staff Physicist - Trapped-Ion Quantum Computing

**Job Summary**

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Physicist to join our Research and Development department at IonQ Inc. As a Staff Physicist, you will play a crucial role in designing, integrating, and evaluating the performance of our next-gen quantum computers.

**Key Responsibilities**

  • Lead the hardware architecture of upcoming quantum computers, driving innovation and excellence in the field.
  • Direct the subsystem development and integration in collaboration with engineering and software teams, ensuring seamless coordination and effective communication.
  • Analyze performance data of a trapped-ion quantum computer, identifying areas for improvement and implementing data-driven solutions.
  • Guide physicists and engineers in progressing from assembling hardware to coherent gate operations, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and expertise.
  • Hold a PhD in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics specializing in quantum computing with trapped ions or neutral atoms, with a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Have over 5 years of post-PhD experience in either industry or national labs, demonstrating a proven track record of success and leadership.
  • Possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

**Preferred Qualifications**

  • More than 7 years of post-PhD experience in industry or national labs, with a strong background in developing RF trap waveforms for ion shuttling.
  • Experience as a principal investigator or technical lead in developing trapped-ion quantum computers, with a proven ability to drive projects forward and achieve results.
  • Background in engineering or systems engineering to transform a complex system into a product, with a strong understanding of the intersection of hardware and software.
