Job Title: Staff Physicist - Trapped-Ion Quantum Computing

IonQ Inc. is a leading developer of trapped-ion quantum computers. We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Physicist to join our Research and Development team in Bothell, WA.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a talented physicist with expertise in trapped-ion quantum computing to lead the system design, integration, and performance characterization of our next-generation trapped-ion quantum computers. The successful candidate will have a strong background in quantum computing, ion trapping, and experimental physics, and will be responsible for mentoring physicists and engineers in taking assembled hardware from the initial stages of ion trapping to coherent gate operations.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the hardware architecture of our next-generation quantum computers.
  • Collaborate with the engineering and software teams to develop and integrate subsystems.
  • Measure and analyze data on the performance of a trapped-ion quantum computer.
  • Mentor physicists and engineers in taking assembled hardware from the initial stages of ion trapping to coherent gate operations.
Requirements:
  • PhD in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics with expertise in quantum computing with trapped ions or neutral atoms.
  • 5+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications in journals.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in quantum networking using trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • 7+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Proficient in developing RF trap waveforms for coherent shuttling of ions.
  • Served as a principal investigator or technical lead in the development of trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product.
