Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team at the Downtown Berkeley YMCA. As a lifeguard and swim instructor, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and positive aquatic environment for our members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prevent Incidents: Maintain active surveillance of the pool area at all times, using American Red Cross standards to prevent incidents and ensure member safety.
  • Emergency Response: Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately, in accordance with YMCA policies and standards.
  • Member Engagement: Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff, creating a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Safety Protocols: Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas, including maintaining appropriate lifeguard-to-swimmer ratios.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Check rescue equipment and pool for hazardous conditions, and promptly report problems.
  • Chemical Testing: Perform chemical testing, when not guarding, as required, following safety standards and take appropriate action, including accurate record maintenance.
  • Training and Development: Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings, and support special events and other areas as required.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Physical Demands: Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard, including hearing noises and distress signals, remaining alert, and seeing and observing all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Leadership Competencies: Demonstrate inclusion, functional expertise, communication, and influence in the workplace.
Qualifications
  • Certifications: YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard CPR, AED & First Aid, or equivalent.
  • Physical and Mental Readiness: Maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Age Requirement: At least 16 years of age.
