NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE OR CERTIFICATIONS NEEDED. We provide comprehensive training for all new hires.

We are looking for part-time Aquatic Safety Attendants and/or swim instructors who are adaptable, dependable, and energetic individuals ready to work between 6-25 hours per week in a dynamic and diverse setting.

Our goal is to create a safe, clean, and enjoyable aquatic environment for our members. We believe swimming is a vital skill for individuals of all ages, and our staff plays a crucial role in helping both children and adults reach their personal swimming goals.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The responsibilities of this role align with the Goals, Mission, and Policies of the YMCA of the East Bay. You will be tasked with ensuring safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and in surrounding areas while fostering a positive atmosphere that encourages member safety and engagement. You will also be required to respond to emergencies as necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Proactively prevent incidents by maintaining vigilant observation of the pool area at all times, adhering to American Red Cross standards through constant scanning and shifting surveillance positions.
  2. Be familiar with and execute all emergency protocols, responding to situations immediately in line with YMCA policies. Complete necessary reports accurately and promptly.
  3. Build and maintain positive relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff.
  4. Understand and consistently apply safety regulations, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas, ensuring appropriate lifeguard to swimmer ratios are maintained.
  5. Wear suitable attire that reflects the lifeguarding role and equip yourself for all safety and rescue tasks.
  6. Inspect rescue equipment and the pool for any hazardous conditions, reporting issues promptly.
  7. Conduct chemical testing when not actively guarding, following safety standards and maintaining accurate records.
  8. Participate in all staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  9. Assist with special events, support other areas as needed, and perform additional duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Physically perform all essential lifeguard skills. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including both in the water and throughout the assigned area.
  • Maintain alertness without lapses in consciousness.
  • Observe all sections of your assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Ability to understand and respond in English.
  • Meet and uphold the strength and lifting requirements as mandated by lifeguard certification, including the ability to lift and move 30 lbs. of pool equipment.
