Role Summary:
This position involves the management and distribution of routine and specialized medical and surgical supplies and instruments essential for patient care. Responsibilities include cleaning, high-level disinfection, sterilization, and inventory management of medical and surgical instrument trays. This role acknowledges the advanced skills and leadership capabilities of Central Processing Technology personnel within the Perioperative environment.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Prepare instrument baskets, basin sets, and equipment for sterilization using established checklists.
2. Assemble various clinical supply sets, ensuring cleanliness and functionality of instruments.
3. Decontaminate and thoroughly clean instruments and equipment utilized in diverse procedures.
4. Distribute supplies and instruments to designated areas.
5. Monitor inventory levels of supplies and equipment, ensuring adequacy.
6. Identify equipment malfunctions, perform minor repairs, and report major issues to appropriate personnel.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of instrument processing and adhere to manufacturer guidelines for equipment use.
8. Exhibit proficiency in the reprocessing and maintenance of endoscopic equipment according to established policies and instructions.
9. Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety protocols.
10. Serve as a primary mentor for new staff.
11. Lead initiatives for troubleshooting and quality improvement processes.
12. Maintain supplies necessary for cleaning and reprocessing, effectively communicating equipment failures and repair needs.
13. Accurately document data in relevant logs.



Additional Information

Education Requirements:
● No specific educational qualifications required if other position criteria are met.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Certification from an accredited program in instrument reprocessing is necessary.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a central sterile technician.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● For UNC Medical Center: Successful completion of SCST portfolio requirements is essential.
