Position Overview

Become an integral part of a diverse organization dedicated to enhancing the health and wellness of the communities we serve.

Role Summary:
Responsible for the processing and management of both routine and specialized medical and surgical supplies and instruments utilized in patient care. This role involves cleaning, high-level disinfection/sterilization, and packaging of medical and surgical instrument trays while managing inventory. This position acknowledges the expertise of Central Processing Technology personnel for their advanced skills and leadership within the Perioperative environment.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Assemble instrument baskets, basin sets, and equipment according to established checklists, preparing them for sterilization.
2. Compile sets of supplies and instruments for various clinical applications, ensuring cleanliness and operational integrity (e.g., sharpness of scissors, smooth operation of hinged instruments).
3. Decontaminate, disinfect, and meticulously clean supplies, instruments, and equipment used in diverse procedures.
4. Distribute instruments, equipment, and supplies to designated areas.
5. Monitor and uphold adequate inventory levels of supplies, instruments, and equipment.
6. Inspect equipment for malfunctions, perform minor repairs, and alert appropriate personnel for major repairs.
7. Exhibit knowledge of instrument and equipment instructions for use (IFUs) and process instruments according to manufacturer guidelines.
8. Demonstrate technical proficiency in the reprocessing and maintenance of endoscopes and other endoscopic devices in accordance with high-level disinfection (HLD) policies and manufacturer instructions. Maintain scope washers and washer adapters, checking detergent levels and disinfectant effectiveness as per policy. Communicate effectively regarding scope repairs, loaners, supplies, and quality improvement information by maintaining accurate documentation.
9. Adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols as mandated.
10. Serve as the primary preceptor for new staff.
11. Act as a leader in troubleshooting and quality assurance initiatives.
12. Maintain necessary supplies for cleaning and reprocessing, effectively communicating equipment failures and repair needs.
13. Accurately document data in relevant logs.



Additional Information

Education Requirements:
● No specific educational requirements as long as other qualifications are met.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Certification from an accredited program for instrument reprocessing is required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a central sterile technician.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● For UNC Medical Center: Successful completion of SCST portfolio requirements is essential.
