Hospital Operations Supervisor Job Summary

The RN House Supervisor serves as a liaison for the entire facility, assuming shift responsibility for evaluating, coordinating, and maintaining safe and effective patient care delivery and operations for hospital-wide activities. This role provides nursing expertise in the management of patient care, staffing, and bed management, ensuring the interpretation and use of established policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Resource Coordination: Coordinates and integrates resources throughout the facility, problem-solving on a daily basis and communicating concerns to nursing leadership, Administrator-on-call, and Medical Staff as appropriate.
  • Hospital Capacity Management: Manages hospital capacity and capability for services at all times, monitoring changes in patient volume or acuity in inpatient and outpatient departments, including the Emergency Room.
  • Admission and Transfer Coordination: Triages and prioritizes patients for admission, assigns admissions in accordance with patient needs, and accepts transferred patients on behalf of the hospital in coordination with the accepting physician.
  • Communication and Representation: Practices effective and professional communication techniques with all interactions, enforces and assists in the interpretation of hospital, departmental, and medical staff policies, and acts as on-site administrative representative for Hospital Administration outside of customary business hours.
  • Education and Training: Educates, trains, supervises, counsels, and has authority to discipline when policies or safety practices are breached, documenting details and following up with management timely.
  • Emergency Response: Responds to all patient and facility emergencies, serving as Incident Commander initially and Operations Manager (or other role as assigned) in the Emergency Operations Center during facility and community emergency situations.
  • Risk Management: Identifies risk management issues and potential and actual significant events, initiates proper procedures, and communicates with Administrator on Call and other department or unit managers for follow-up or additional action.
  • Quality Patient Care: Ensures quality patient care according to professional practice guidelines, intervenes as needed, and implements disciplinary/corrective action procedures which may include pending termination.
  • Collaboration and Advocacy: Coordinates safe patient care with physicians and healthcare team, advocates for patients and families, and serves as Administrative Representative for resolution and documentation of customer service issues.
