Position Title: Community Engagement Organizer – Waterbury and Surrounding Areas
About The Connecticut Project: The Connecticut Project (TCP) is a transformative organization dedicated to social change, utilizing innovative strategies and tools to advocate for meaningful outcomes and systemic improvements for individuals across Connecticut striving for a better quality of life.
Our mission is to create a just, thriving, and hopeful Connecticut where factors such as race, gender, income, geography, and other circumstances do not dictate opportunities.
Position Overview: Community Engagement Organizers are essential members of TCP's outreach strategy, reporting to the Manager of Mobilization and Field Strategy. They collaborate within a team of organizers, each tasked with executing TCP's outreach plan in designated regions or municipalities.
Organizers are responsible for overseeing regional outreach efforts, which include canvassing three days a week, recruitment, and training, employing a combination of direct and peer-to-peer engagement tactics.
Additionally, they will support the development of leaders and supporters, as well as assemble and lead local canvassing teams to engage with neighbors and gather input.
Organizers will also play a crucial role in campaign and cross-functional teams, ensuring that TCP's strategies, communications, and policy solutions reflect the needs of lower-income and asset-limited households.
The Community Engagement Organizer will work under the guidance of the Manager of Mobilization and Field Strategy, collaborating closely with fellow organizers, TCP staff, coalition partners, and community members.
This is a full-time, salaried position.
Core Responsibilities:
- Implement a comprehensive outreach and data-driven field plan to identify, recruit, train, and mobilize leaders and supporters, focusing on voter engagement, volunteer recruitment, grassroots development, and fostering community partnerships that elevate local leadership in support of TCP's objectives.
- Conduct canvassing for a minimum of four hours, three days a week, to build new relationships for TCP's organizing efforts.
- Engage in 5-10 weekly one-on-one follow-up conversations with leads generated from canvassing activities.
- Facilitate monthly gatherings for the local communities the organizer is serving.
- Develop 20 new community leaders annually.
- Recruit, train, and promote leadership at all levels within a specified region, focusing on sustainable grassroots activism.
- Create a well-organized network of connected and engaged supporters within the designated area, utilizing CRM systems, communication platforms, social media, and other relevant engagement tools in collaboration with TCP staff.
- Assist the Manager of Mobilization and Field Strategy in crafting training materials and support for TCP's field program, including scripts and training for door-to-door outreach, phone banking, and other voter engagement strategies.
- Execute grassroots advocacy initiatives, including lobbying efforts, in-district meetings, town halls, letter writing campaigns, phone banks, lobby days, and annual grassroots leadership conferences.
- Implement strategies for lead generation to convert leads into active supporters and leaders who engage in local and state actions, fostering a sense of community.
- Support the coaching, training, and deployment of field organizing cohorts in collaboration with TCP grantees.
- Establish and maintain strong, trusting relationships with local political leaders, partner organizations, and activist groups.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager of Mobilization and Field Strategy.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Attributes:
- A strong passion for The Connecticut Project's vision and mission, with a commitment to achieving organizational excellence.
- Professional experience in organizing, canvassing, community engagement, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
- Demonstrated strengths in strategic thinking and an entrepreneurial approach to advocating for policy, power, and mindset changes.
- Exceptional leadership and management skills, fostering a motivating environment that energizes team members.
- Excellent oral and written communication abilities, including experience leading coalition discussions and producing high-quality written materials.
- Able to navigate ambiguity and thrive in a dynamic environment; adaptable and responsive to feedback, focused on continuous improvement and innovation.
- Strong organizational skills, capable of prioritizing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, demonstrating empathy, humor, and resilience; values diversity in all its forms.
- Familiarity with local history, community dynamics, leadership, and the political landscape in the targeted region is preferred.
- A growth-oriented mindset.
Alignment with TCP Organizational Values:
- People First: Prioritizing the interests of individuals across Connecticut, especially those facing barriers to opportunities.
- Courageous Acts: Committed to growth, equity, and justice, learning from mistakes, and challenging established norms to drive progress.
- Better Together: Emphasizing the common humanity of people to foster innovative solutions and stronger outcomes.
- Optimistic Realists: Balancing possibility with pragmatism to achieve meaningful change.
- Continuous Improvement: Engaging in collaborative learning and enhancing methods based on community feedback.
Team Structure and Reporting: TCP's Advocacy & External Affairs Team includes Marketing & Communications, Mobilization & Field Strategy, and Policy & Advocacy. This position reports to the Manager of Mobilization and Field Strategy.
Compensation & Benefits: This is a full-time position operating in a hybrid environment designed for staff across Connecticut. Compensation ranges from $70,000 to $90,000, commensurate with experience. TCP offers a comprehensive employee benefits package, including health, dental, vision, life, disability, and supplemental life insurance; a 401(K) match program; and competitive vacation and holiday policies.
How to Apply: Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter that outlines their relevant experience, interest in the position, and how they learned about this opportunity. This posting will remain open until filled, with interviews conducted on a rolling basis. Finalists will undergo background and reference checks.
