POSITION OVERVIEW: PRACTICAL NURSING SPECIALIST

The Practical Nursing Specialist is accountable to the Unit Manager and the residents for delivering nursing care within the Skilled Nursing Unit, Short Term Rehabilitation Unit, or Memory Care Unit at Sayre Christian Village. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to recognize individual resident requirements, adhering to both dependent and independent nursing functions, while conforming to established nursing practices, procedures, and standards based on the scope of practical nursing, under the guidance of the Unit Manager or Charge Nurse.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES of the Practical Nursing Specialist
  • Deliver exceptional care to a designated group of residents/patients.
  • Alert the charge nurse and/or physician when there is a change in a resident's condition.
  • Conduct daily rounds to assess each resident and provide additional support as necessary throughout the assigned shift.
  • Evaluate residents upon admission to formulate an interim care plan and further assess to create a long-term care strategy.
  • Update care plans as necessary and required.
  • Administer medications and treatments to residents; oversee the administration of intravenous fluids; place medication orders with the pharmacy.
  • Engage with residents and their families; refer to other departments when appropriate.
  • Maintain accountability for controlled substances; inventory medications and report discrepancies to the supervisor at the beginning and end of each shift.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS ESSENTIAL FOR THE ROLE of the Practical Nursing Specialist
  • Regularly communicates with staff, residents, family members, physicians, etc.
  • Occasionally lifts objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently remains in a standing position.
  • Regularly stoops, kneels, or bends when assisting residents and colleagues with resident needs.
  • Must be capable of utilizing all body limbs up to full capacity.
QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND for the Practical Nursing Specialist
  • 2-3 years of experience preferred but not mandatory as a licensed nurse in areas such as Skilled Nursing Facility, Memory Care, Short Term Rehabilitation, or Orthopedics.
  • Current KY Licensed Practical Nurse License.
