Position Overview:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is accountable to the Registered Nurse and/or preceptor for delivering direct patient care within the defined scope of practice.
This role is situated within the Out-patient Specialty Clinics of the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration.
The LPN is expected to execute patient care responsibilities proficiently, ensuring all assigned tasks are completed effectively. Key Responsibilities:
- Implement patient care protocols based on individual patient assessments, utilizing sound judgment to determine the appropriate sequence of procedures and treatments.
- Monitor and respond to patient needs for care, including medication administration, equipment-assisted care, and education for patients and their families.
In organizing and delivering care, the LPN must consider various factors such as emotional, cultural, spiritual, socioeconomic, and age-related aspects.
Medication Management:
Administer prescribed medications through various routes (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous) and perform treatments in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Observe and document any physical or emotional changes in the patient's condition resulting from medications or treatments, promptly reporting any deviations to the Registered Nurse or physician.
Emergency Response:
Recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, alert the Registered Nurse or physician, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as necessary.
Possess a solid understanding of human behavior and patient responses, effectively utilizing this knowledge to foster positive interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
Patient Engagement:
Build constructive relationships with patients and their families to promote effective communication and socialization skills.
Support for Diagnostic Procedures:
Assist in complex diagnostic tests and specialized procedures, including patient preparation, assisting during examinations, and monitoring patient conditions throughout the process.
Work Schedule:
Day shifts such as 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM or 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.
Compensation:
Competitive salary with regular increases, along with a comprehensive benefits package including annual leave, sick leave, and paid federal holidays.

Eligible for parental leave after 12 months of employment, childcare subsidies, and retirement plans including a traditional federal pension and 401K options.
Qualifications:
Must be a U.S. Citizen and possess an active, unrestricted license as a Practical or Vocational Nurse. Candidates should have graduated from an accredited nursing program and demonstrate proficiency in English.
Physical Requirements:
The role requires regular walking, bending, lifting, and other physical activities. The LPN must be able to work closely with others and respond to various alarms and communications.
Participation in health and safety programs, including vaccinations, is mandatory for all healthcare personnel.
