Campus Security Specialist

We are seeking a dedicated Campus Security Specialist to join our team at Otis College of Art and Design.
Position Overview:
The Campus Security Specialist is responsible for a diverse range of safety and security functions to ensure the protection of the College community and its facilities. This role involves patrolling designated areas and responding to communications for both routine and emergency situations, addressing both criminal and non-criminal incidents. The specialist conducts investigations and may make arrests as necessary, while actively deterring unlawful activities and fulfilling public safety responsibilities. In emergencies, this position is expected to report to work promptly and will report directly to the Chief Safety & Security Officer.
KEY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Conduct regular patrols and perform security assessments as assigned. Ensure the security of buildings and College property by managing access control. Open and secure facilities in line with departmental protocols or as instructed. Operate and monitor electronic access systems and other security equipment.
• Respond to communications for assistance in both routine and emergency scenarios. Evaluate situations at incident locations and determine the appropriate course of action. Contact local law enforcement when necessary and assess medical emergencies, coordinating medical assistance as needed.
• Maintain crowd control and perimeter security during incidents, emergencies, and special events.
• Provide escort services for students, staff, faculty, and visitors between College buildings and their vehicles.
• Assist with parking management and ensure vehicle and pedestrian safety. Direct traffic and provide guidance as required. Issue citations when necessary.
• Keep accurate records of daily activities, including duty times, incidents, actions taken, observations, and other pertinent information. Prepare detailed incident and crime reports as required, ensuring compliance with legal standards through consultation with supervisors.
• Support the planning and execution of crime prevention initiatives and public information campaigns on topics such as personal safety, theft prevention, emergency response, and loss mitigation.
• Enforce safety regulations and College policies related to health and fire prevention. Report any hazardous or unsafe conditions as appropriate.
• Act as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and mandatory reporter under relevant legislation. Receive reports of criminal incidents and notify supervisors of any ongoing threats to the College community.
• Carry non-lethal defense tools (e.g., baton, aerosol projector, handcuffs) and make arrests as necessary, adhering to established training and legal requirements.
• Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
• Proficiency in operating CCTV systems and access control software is highly desirable.
• Competence in using computers, databases, and MS Office applications is essential.
• Basic mathematical skills are necessary for calculating property loss in incident reports.
• A valid Security Guard permit issued by the appropriate regulatory body is required prior to employment commencement.
- Possession of a current PC 832 Certification/SB 1626 or willingness to obtain certification within a specified timeframe after hiring.
• Completion of an 8-hour training course on baton/pepper spray usage is required before carrying such defense tools.
• Must maintain current CPR/First Aid and AED certifications throughout employment.
• A valid driver's license is required.
• Must have access to a reliable vehicle.
PREFERRED SKILLS and EXPERIENCE:
• Some college coursework or technical training is preferred.
