Basic Function

Under guidance, facilitate the nurturing, growth, and education of young children in a child development program.

Key Responsibilities

1. Design and implement engaging activities and educational experiences; create and uphold a safe, developmentally suitable environment in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

2. Supervise and mentor Associate Teachers and CDC Assistants, along with students and volunteers in the classroom.

3. Interact with children in a supportive and encouraging manner.

4. Develop age-appropriate lesson plans and activities focusing on various developmental areas including science, math, music, art, language, social, emotional, and physical growth; evaluate plans created by Associate Teachers.

5. Conduct educational demonstrations and activities for children.

6. Act as the primary caregiver for a designated group of children; perform necessary evaluations and assessments.

7. Hold discussions with parents regarding their child's development, achievements, and challenges.

8. Establish and implement strategies for conflict resolution and problem-solving among children.

9. Adhere to center policies and procedures, particularly those concerning health and safety.

10. Provide guidance to staff, volunteers, students, and families regarding health, safety, and other protocols.

11. Oversee groups of children during various activities; ensure safe play and proper setup of equipment.

12. Supervise restroom use; assist with personal hygiene and training.

13. Prepare and serve nutritious snacks and meals; manage food preparation and safety.

14. Administer basic First Aid as necessary; promote healthy habits.

15. Perform light cleaning duties to maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.

16. Operate classroom equipment and ensure proper food storage and sanitation.

17. Identify and address the special needs of children and families.

18. Encourage family involvement in classroom activities and events.

19. Maintain accurate records of activities and assessments.

20. Supervise and evaluate student interns and their activities.

21. Carry out additional related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to:

Associate's degree in early childhood education or a related field and one year of experience in a structured environment with children.

Possession of, or eligibility to obtain and maintain, a Child Development Teacher Permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

1. Understanding of early childhood education principles and practices.
2. Familiarity with inclusive education practices.
3. Effective instructional techniques.
4. Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
5. Strong interpersonal skills.

Ability to:

1. Plan and manage activities in a child development setting.
2. Guide and oversee the work of Associate Teachers and support staff.
3. Create engaging lesson plans.
4. Monitor and support children's behavior and activities.
5. Maintain a clean and safe environment.
6. Communicate effectively with children and adults.
7. Build cooperative relationships with families and staff.
