POSITION SUMMARY

The City of Aventura is currently seeking applications for Full-Time Certified Police Officers to fill existing vacancies and to create a pool of qualified candidates for future opportunities.

As a Police Officer, you will engage in community patrol, initial investigations, traffic management, and law enforcement duties. Officers may be assigned to various divisions within the department, including but not limited to: Road Patrol, Detective Bureau, Traffic Unit, Training Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Marine Patrol, etc.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Police Officers may work on a rotating shift schedule and will be responsible for the following tasks, utilizing their judgment in accordance with their training, experience, and applicable laws and regulations:
  • Conducting patrols in urban, suburban, and rural areas to identify criminal activity, traffic violations, or other incidents requiring police intervention.
  • Documenting incidents through reports, field interrogation cards, and other necessary documentation.
  • Performing preliminary investigations on all reported crimes, incidents, and violations.
  • Responding to a variety of calls for service, including routine and emergency situations.
  • Interviewing suspects, witnesses, and individuals involved in incidents.
  • Collecting and preserving physical evidence related to investigations.
  • Executing arrests and detaining individuals in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Preparing cases for court proceedings and providing testimony as required.
  • Maintaining public safety and enforcing laws and regulations.
  • Coordinating with emergency services and other law enforcement agencies as necessary.
  • Conducting follow-up investigations as time and resources allow.
  • Taking ownership of their responsibilities and striving to de-escalate conflicts when possible.
  • Generating various reports and records, including incident reports, property receipts, and other documentation.
  • Staying accessible via radio, laptop, or phone for emergency dispatches.
The role requires proficiency in the use of firearms and other defensive tools, with officers expected to carry these items while on duty and during off-duty assignments.

Officers must adhere to established police protocols to ensure their safety and that of their colleagues.

Collaboration with fellow officers and other city departments is essential, as is communication with legal advisors regarding cases and departmental policies.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Maintaining department equipment and supplies, reporting any deficiencies to supervisors.

Engaging with the public, court officials, and other city representatives during the execution of police duties.

Participating in various departmental committees as needed.

Performing other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must successfully complete a comprehensive background check, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug screening. A physical agility test must be passed within the last six months prior to application, conducted by an accredited training center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Entry Level:
  1. Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of employment;
  2. Must possess a valid driver's license without any suspensions or revocations;
  3. No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history;
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen;
  5. Must be proficient in reading and writing in English;
  6. Must demonstrate good moral character and a strong work ethic;
  7. Residents of specific counties must complete a full physical agility test and swim test prior to application. Swim test is waived for lateral transfers with prior successful completion.
  8. Must complete a basic Police Officer Academy and pass the State Police Officer Exam.
Lateral Entry:
  1. Must meet all Entry Level requirements and possess a valid certification as a Police Officer.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  1. Must have a minimum of 60 college credits or a High School diploma/GED along with three years of honorable military service or three years of law enforcement experience.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED:
  • Transcripts or diploma reflecting educational qualifications;
  • Results of the physical agility test taken within the last six months;
  • Swim test results;
  • State of Florida Law Enforcement Officer certification or proof of enrollment in a Law Enforcement Academy.

  7. Ability to follow instructions and meet special requirements;
  8. Knowledge of safety protocols associated with law enforcement duties.
