Position Overview

WSP is on the lookout for a Power Systems Engineer to become a vital part of our California Buildings division. This role will involve contributing to various projects within our team.

Your Contributions


Gather, organize, and evaluate data related to substation elements, equipment specifications for procurement package formulation and pricing, as well as design and review processes in accordance with industry standards.

Assist in the assessment of third-party design documents, procurement lists, and project blueprints.


Execute professional electrical engineering tasks associated with the creation of single line, three line, wiring diagrams, general layout, substation configuration, grounding grid design, and lightning protection, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and permits.


Engage in the integration of innovative techniques, concept development, operational strategies, and various design requirements, focusing on equipment sizing and cabling, AC/DC panel design, and conduit and trenching design strategies that prioritize safety and functionality.


Support senior engineers by conducting research and providing recommendations on essential components identified in design specifications, as well as field equipment applications and operations.


Assess site characteristics, offering technical assistance on diverse engineering, design, testing, maintenance modifications, and construction procedures.


Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, grounding, lighting circuits and controls, facility and electrical service, and power distribution.


Create data visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of findings.

Uphold quality control standards and procedures for precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.


Collaborate as an individual or as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, planners, scientists, and construction professionals to execute project tasks, assist with installation layouts, calculate costs and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, and ensure project compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements.

Assist in the development and scoping of small to medium-sized projects.


Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that elucidate research and findings aimed at improving, preventing, controlling, restoring, or addressing design and/or electrical engineering challenges.


Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gather further insights on specific design and construction issues and to plan for future requirements.


Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data collected during field investigations, providing input for developing action plans for risk mitigation activities.

Support the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).


Work collaboratively with other engineers and disciplines on projects involving electrical infrastructure authorities on federally, state, regionally, and locally funded improvement and development initiatives.


Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.

Take on additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.


3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in an electrical engineering role focused on designing power transmission and distribution systems in utility or industrial/commercial settings.

Engineer in Training Certification.

Familiarity with operations and project controls for reporting purposes.

Understanding of electrical engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and their application to permitting and project-related issues.

Experience in infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including both rehabilitation and new design projects.

Ability to coordinate with regulatory agencies and comprehend requirements.

Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping standards.


Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences, conveying ideas clearly and professionally.

Demonstrated self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Capacity to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instructions, work independently, and adhere to company policies.

Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, mathematical principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

Experience with discipline-specific design software (e.g., CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP), AutoCADD electrical.


Critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to apply technical knowledge to derive conclusions from testing results, data collation, and statistical analysis, arriving at the most effective and logical solutions.


Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP's health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Flexibility to work schedules that align with project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Occasional travel may be necessary based on project-specific needs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Engineering.

Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.

40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR preferred).

Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training is desirable.

Compensation:

Expected Salary:
$82,400 - $107,000


WSP USA provides this compensation range based on the successful applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.

WSP USA reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and compensation based on circumstances unrelated to an applicant's protected status.
