The Lead Surety Underwriting Specialist is responsible for generating underwriting profits and safeguarding against losses through meticulous risk assessment and the underwriting of various types of contract surety bonds, adhering to established authority limits.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Enhance company profitability and reduce losses by judiciously accepting or declining all forms of bonds, particularly contract bonds, while efficiently managing a high volume of submissions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between agents, contractors, and the branch to foster positive relationships and resolve any underwriting or procedural inquiries.
- Engage in regular travel within the designated territory using various modes of transportation, including personal vehicles, public transport, and air travel, to maintain existing business relationships and explore new opportunities.
- Support the development and training of Assistant Underwriters to ensure effective collaboration with agency partners and streamline bond processing.
- Conduct on-site visits to contractors to review records and gather essential information for accurate underwriting decisions.
- Stay informed about market trends, economic conditions, legal changes, and competitor practices to maintain a competitive edge.
- Implement underwriting adjustments as directed by management to ensure the profitability of diverse business classes.
- Utilize Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to manage agency data and contribute to the marketing growth objectives of the branch.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
This role requires a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience, along with a minimum of three years in bond underwriting or a comparable combination of education and experience.
A valid motor vehicle operator's record that meets company standards is essential.
The position demands the ability to work independently and efficiently in a dynamic environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office applications is required.
Essential skills include exceptional verbal and written communication, strong organizational capabilities, precise proofreading, the ability to maintain accurate records, discretion with confidential information, keen attention to detail, and proficiency with various office equipment.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
This position necessitates regular travel using personal vehicles, public transport, and/or air travel.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
This role involves prolonged periods of sitting, with occasional standing or walking. It may require lifting, pushing, or pulling items weighing up to 10 pounds. No special protective equipment is needed, and ergonomic tools are available for employee use.
