Job Overview:

As a key member of the Society for Conservation Biology, the Environmental Safety Specialist will oversee the development and enhancement of health, safety, ergonomic, and environmental initiatives within the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate, execute, and uphold policies, procedures, and programs pertaining to health, safety, ergonomics, and environmental standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
  • Promote enhancements in safety and environmental performance through audits, behavior-based safety initiatives, ergonomics, and safety committees.
  • Maintain accurate OSHA recordkeeping and ergonomic reporting within stipulated timelines.
  • Lead Safety and Ergonomic Committee meetings, facilitating the resolution of outstanding issues.
  • Conduct comprehensive Ergonomic Assessments utilizing various assessment tools.
  • Promptly respond to and investigate incidents involving injuries, accidents, illnesses, near misses, and property damage.
  • Provide first aid and act as a First Responder during emergencies.
  • Foster a positive safety culture by adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all employees and visitors by maintaining safety and housekeeping standards.
  • Actively participate in the division's safety program through regular inspections and effective incident investigations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10 Hour OSHA Certification.

Experience:

A minimum of three years of experience in safety, ergonomics, and environmental practices within a manufacturing context is essential.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills for managing sensitive situations.
  • Detail-oriented with effective organizational capabilities.
  • Proficient analytical, assessment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid understanding of federal and state occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with ISO standards.
  • Knowledge of ADA, FMLA, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Working Conditions:

This position involves work in both office and manufacturing environments, requiring normal mobility and the ability to perform tasks at a computer. The role may involve exposure to varying temperatures and physical activities such as sitting, walking, standing, and lifting up to thirty pounds.
