Position Overview:
The Director of Risk Management is responsible for overseeing the daily functions of the risk management division, focusing on administrative and operational tasks that yield high-quality outcomes. This role involves evaluating and identifying existing and potential risks that could impact patient safety and financial operations. The Director ensures the provision of patient-centered, cost-effective quality services throughout the care continuum, optimal resource utilization, and adherence to relevant local, state, and federal regulations.


Key Responsibilities:
1. Directs the daily operations of the department and the risk management prevention and control program, ensuring compliance with guidelines and regulatory standards while assessing the overall effectiveness of departmental activities.
2. Collaborates with senior leadership and key stakeholders to establish the strategic direction and operational plan for enhancing risk management initiatives, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and objectives.
3. Develops and executes a quality assurance program, setting service goals and priorities while identifying issues and implementing cost-effective solutions for service enhancement.
4. In partnership with relevant staff, conducts ongoing evaluations of existing policies and standard operating procedures to identify discrepancies and implement necessary revisions, while reviewing patient and public safety protocols.
5. Oversees various committees, forecasting changes in risk and conducting research to identify and analyze risk trends, potentially participating in specialized risk studies.
6. Compiles, reviews, and interprets risk data, presenting significant findings to committees and stakeholders, and devising strategies and recommendations for interventions and control measures.
7. Acts as a principal advisor and resource for senior leadership, liaising with appropriate agencies on matters related to patient and public safety, risk assessment, and security excellence.
8. Investigates incidents related to safety, promptly reporting to relevant public health and regulatory agencies, while analyzing and documenting incidents to identify contributing factors.
9. Works with senior leadership to develop monitoring and reporting procedures, creating strategies to mitigate potential risks and lessen their impact.
10. Prepares and participates in the development of the fiscal year budget, ensuring operations remain within budgetary constraints and monitoring all risk management-related expenses.
11. Collaborates with stakeholders to assess organizational needs, monitoring resource utilization and making necessary adjustments to support initiatives.
12. Aids in the creation of training programs, providing orientation and guidance to staff, while assessing learning needs and evaluating program effectiveness.
13. Educates clinical and non-clinical staff, community members, and caregivers on patient and public safety protocols and prevention techniques.
14. Ensures compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals policies and national standards, maintaining accreditation requirements and safety management standards.
15. Participates in quality assurance and performance improvement activities as required.
16. Performs additional related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
1. Master’s degree in Risk Management, Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related field, with three years of experience in risk management and quality programs, including one year in a supervisory role; or
2. Bachelor’s degree in the aforementioned fields, with four years of risk management experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity; or
3. Bachelor’s degree with two years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting, plus two years of related risk management experience, including one year in a supervisory role; or
4. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Certification as a Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or a current clinical license may substitute for one year of experience, provided candidates have at least a bachelor’s degree and one year of supervisory experience.
