Job Summary:

MedStar Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our Occupational Health team at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. This role will perform clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse.

Duties may include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement, and documentation of vital signs, and assistance with patient exams, telephone, and clerical support.

Responsibilities include assisting with patient preparation for examination, office procedures, examination, and education of patients. The ideal candidate will manage patient volume throughout the workday, provide telephone screening services to gather information from patients, determine appropriate disposition, and document.

Additional responsibilities include updating appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance, managing drug and medical supply inventories, conducting motivational interviews, and participating in population management activities.

The successful candidate will participate in performance improvement initiatives to improve care quality and safety, ensuring ongoing compliance by maintaining and auditing temperature logs, ensuring medications are current/unexpired, maintaining emergency equipment, and keeping the work area free of clutter.

Key responsibilities also include screening all patients for preventative care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and potential fall risk, conducting surveillance for transitions of care, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks, and performing laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, and vision and hearing testing.

Under provider supervision, the Medical Assistant may insert intravenous catheters for IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications, perform phlebotomy, and document activities in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR).

Requirements include experience working in an ambulatory care/medical office or equivalent, with a completed externship program at MedStar Health may be substituted for experience. A Medical Assistant program or equivalent is preferred, as well as electronic medical records experience.

For Cardiology offices only, 6 months of experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent is required, or a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology/Science or related major.
