Sleep Study Technologist II - Pediatric Sleep Lab
The Sleep Study Technologist will conduct a diverse range of polysomnographic assessments on patients presenting with potential sleep disorders due to various medical conditions. This role involves preparing patients for evaluations, executing the studies, and gathering critical data essential for analyzing the test outcomes. Additionally, the technologist will collaborate in the care of patients within the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), sharing responsibilities with EMU staff. The incumbent must exhibit proficiency in the responsibilities of a Polysomnography Technologist, ensuring age-appropriate care for patients from infancy through young adulthood, as well as select adult cases. The technologist will also support operations in the Sleep Clinic, coordinating schedules for patients, physicians, psychologists, and facilities.
Work Schedule: Weekend night shifts, 13 hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Key ResponsibilitiesIn accordance with established policies and procedures, the incumbent is responsible for executing various polysomnographic procedures on patients with potential sleep disorders.
- Conducting Polysomnography
- Performing Multiple Sleep Latency Tests
- Monitoring Oxygen Levels
- Monitoring pCO2 Levels
- Conducting ECG Monitoring
- Performing Esophageal pH Monitoring
- Administering Portable Polysomnography
- Facilitating CPAP and BiPAP ventilation
- Applying non-standard recording parameters for EEG-specific tests as needed
These assessments may involve specialized recording techniques to capture eye movements, muscle activity, ECG, chest wall movement, tongue movements, and airflow through the nasal and oral passages. Testing may occasionally be required in critical care settings, emergency departments, or patient rooms. Responsibilities in the clinic include managing personnel and facility schedules, overseeing medical records, and ensuring compliance with physician orders and billing procedures.
- Coordinating patient schedules for clinics and diagnostic assessments
- Accurately applying leads in accordance with the International 10:20 System
- Modifying recording methods and equipment to achieve results based on patient history and clinical observations
- Identifying and mitigating artifacts and electrical interference to ensure high-quality recordings
- Understanding EEG, EMG, ECG, respiratory, and oximetry patterns, along with recognizing other physiological patterns
- Possessing comprehensive knowledge of each instrument and its controls, as well as basic electronics and troubleshooting techniques
- Presenting patient activity in an optimal format for clinical evaluation
- Implementing advanced techniques, including protocols for parasomnias versus apnea, seizures versus apnea, video recording, and sizing respiratory belts for various age groups
- Staging or scoring studies based on sleep stage duration and timing
- Providing appropriate patient care and detailed observations during seizures and other emergency situations
- Participating in educational conferences, technical meetings, and training activities, serving as an instructor for junior staff and trainees
- Documenting patient clinical status and history from various sources
- Explaining procedures to patients and family members
- Managing front office responsibilities during peak times or staff absences
- Assisting with the transportation of equipment and patients as needed
- Maintaining departmental records and preparing tracings for archival
- Contributing to the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program within the institution and department
- Ensuring adequate supply levels and placing orders as necessary
- Processing patient charge information
- Maintaining equipment in a calibrated and hygienic condition
- Distributing Patient Satisfaction Surveys to patients or guardians
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Education:
- Graduate of an AMA-accredited two-year Respiratory Therapy Program
- Registry as a Respiratory Therapist (or registry-eligible by the National Board for Respiratory Care) or Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist
- Current licensure or certification to practice respiratory care in Ohio (for Respiratory Therapists)
- Registered by the Association of Polysomnography Technologists or eligible for registration within twelve months of employment
- Current CPR certification. A Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences or a related field is preferred.
- Proficiency in computer operations and technology. A minimum of one year of experience in Polysomnography is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to frequently lift up to thirty pounds
- Ability to occasionally lift up to fifty pounds
- Ability to frequently stand or sit for extended periods
- Occasional transportation of equipment
- Frequent reaching, stooping, and kneeling
