About the Position: Controls Engineer

JOB OVERVIEW:
This role involves managing controls engineering project specifications that encompass control system architecture, DCS/PLC programming, control panel fabrication, instrumentation, testing support, and commissioning assistance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Candidate must demonstrate organizational skills, technical proficiency, effective verbal and written communication, and experience collaborating in a multidisciplinary setting while engaging with engineers, designers, and draftspeople.

Design, develop, and implement DCS/PLC control systems (both software and hardware) to fulfill process specifications while adhering to local or governmental design and implementation regulations.

Familiarity with control panel and system design standards and code practices relevant to local or governmental entities is essential. Generate documentation that outlines control configurations and designs.

Documentation should include operational theory, detailed control system design descriptions, and system implementation/acceptance testing plans.
Ability to collaborate with facility design teams to optimize panel placement, minimizing voltage drop and enhancing panel maintenance.

Capable of executing the following system design calculations/analyses:

Short circuit protection, harmonics, noise mitigation, power consumption, load flow, protective relay/circuit design, ground fault monitoring, and safety system implementation (SIL rating). Proficient in analyzing system designs for hazard analysis development and risk mitigation. Ability to implement control system redundancy to reduce single points of failure.

Create schematics for control system configurations, wiring, network layouts, and equipment panel layouts using AutoCAD. Provide support during initial system start-up and troubleshooting, as well as the development of system documentation.

The individual will engage in automation and control system integration projects for clients in sectors such as entertainment and manufacturing.

Will serve as the technical lead on projects, mentoring junior engineers, technicians, and contractors.
Will also function as Project Manager for smaller initiatives ranging from $50k to $250k.

This role encompasses but is not limited to:
Formulating and executing implementation strategies for projects.
Delegating tasks to meet overall project timelines.
Ensuring all project team members have a clear understanding of the scope of responsibilities.
Creating schedules that align with both company and client requirements.
Assessing project progress and communicating necessary adjustments.

Accountable for all procurement and subcontractor obligations, as well as developing cost estimates and proposals for changes to contract scope.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

(Relevant experience may substitute for degree) A minimum of 5 years in the following areas is preferred: Ethernet-based control systems, safety systems, instrumentation, components, logic programming, and DCS programming (e.g., DeltaV, Experion, 800xA). Experience with instrumentation and controls/PLC system design (e.g., Allen Bradley, Modicon, Siemens) is required.

Familiarity with AutoCAD is also preferred.
Core Competencies: Knowledge of contract documents and specifications. Ability to gather field data and accurately document findings. Capability to perform system design functions.

Skills include Planning, Customer Focus, Timely Decision Making, Communication, Organization, Priority Setting, and Problem Solving. All employees must be proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office environments.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Willingness to travel up to 35%.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Visual acuity, color perception, auditory comprehension, clear speech, manual dexterity, driving, lifting, climbing, and the ability to mount and dismount equipment, as well as pushing and pulling.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Standard office setting, on-site office environment, and varied industrial settings. Frequent use of PCs, fax machines, copiers, and telephones.
