Job Title: Senior Accountant

Join the City of Fort Lauderdale, FL team as a Senior Accountant and contribute to the success of our organization.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Accountant to join our team. As a Senior Accountant, you will be responsible for performing complex financial, administrative, and supervisory work of considerable difficulty. Your primary duties will include:

  • Preparing and reviewing financial reports for upper management, policymakers, and other departments
  • Preparing all reports for internal and external agencies as required
  • Reconciling the accounting system with other city financial software to ensure balances are recorded properly
  • Assisting with internal and external audits, gathering and presenting requested documents, and providing explanations of departmental policies and procedures
  • Preparing journal entries and account adjustments to ensure quality, accuracy, and completeness
  • Preparing complex financial statements and supporting audit work papers, statistical information, and notes for the City's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR)
  • Researching and providing solutions to financial discrepancies and other financial inquiries
  • Making timely payments of employer and employee payroll taxes
  • Participating in the development of citywide budgets, the departmental budget, and monitoring citywide and capital expenditures during the fiscal year
  • May be responsible for project management of new financial management systems
  • Participating with the Information Technology Services Department in the design and development of, and acting as departmental liaison for procurement and implementation of financial management systems
  • Analyzing existing organization and systems in order to develop and recommend new work procedures, controls, and forms to promote efficient and effective operations for fiscal management
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or a closely related field
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of professional accounting and/or fiscal management experience, including two (2) years governmental accounting or auditing
Preferred Qualifications

Local government accounting or fiscal management work experience is highly desirable.

We participate in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) which offers an investment option and a pension option, and requires a 3% contribution from employees. New hires are automatically enrolled in FRS.

Under the U.S. Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, the remaining balance on your student loan may be forgiven after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time at the City of Fort Lauderdale

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Federation of Public Employees and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Federation of Public Employees.
