As we expand our Underground design and construction division, we invite experienced and driven professionals to contribute to our mission in the Raleigh office. We are seeking a seasoned underground engineer to enhance our transmission and distribution team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design teams ranging from 2 to 10 engineers and designers, collaborating closely with construction, procurement, and permitting teams to successfully execute underground transmission projects.
  • Engage with local and national leadership to foster new client relationships while nurturing existing partnerships.
  • Support business development initiatives targeting new clients across North America.
  • Contribute to thought leadership through participation in conferences, marketing efforts, and other internal projects.
  • Prepare comprehensive construction packages for underground projects, including manhole and equipment installation, conduit and duct bank design, and cable replacement.
  • Conduct routing analysis for high voltage transmission line design utilizing CADD/GIS design and mapping software.
  • Assess construction feasibility through route studies, conflict analysis, and cost estimation.
  • Perform field inspections and measurements for overhead and underground electric facilities.
  • Utilize simulation software and analytical tools to evaluate scenarios and provide informed recommendations to clients.
  • Generate reports and visualizations to effectively communicate technical findings and trends.
  • Ensure project deliverables meet client satisfaction and adhere to internal QA/QC guidelines.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of studies, reports, and construction design packages.
  • Prepare calculations and assist with equipment specifications, including cable pulling calculations and ampacity.
  • Draft proposals, engineering/project cost estimates, and execution schedules.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff members.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, subcontractors, and external personnel.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering may substitute for one year of experience.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in underground transmission civil engineering/design.
  • Successful completion of the FE or EIT exam is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of overhead and underground construction methods and electrical system equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in conducting underground field inspections.
  • Knowledge of power flow principles.
  • Proficiency with various underground design tools, CADD, and GIS software.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D is advantageous.
  • Strong background in topographic mapping, surveying, and subsurface utility engineering.
  • Knowledge of easements, right-of-way, and permitting processes.
  • Familiarity with NESC code for electrical design and construction standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capable of developing innovative solutions to complex challenges.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize effectively.
