Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Records Technician to join our team at the Justice, Bureau of Prisons/Federal Prison System. As a Medical Records Technician, you will play a critical role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of medical records for inmates. Your attention to detail and organizational skills will ensure that medical records are complete, consistent, and compliant with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze medical records for completeness, consistency, and compliance with Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Bureau of Prisons (BOP), and medical staff requirements.
  • Perform monthly medical record audits in coordination with the medical staff.
  • Process requests for medical information from outside hospitals, clinics, and physicians.
  • Respond to requests from outside sources requesting release of BOP medical information, including court orders, requests by U.S. Attorneys, and other institutions.
  • Coding, using ICD-9-CM, complicated diagnoses and procedures for discharged inmates, ensuring diagnoses and procedures are supported in the medical record and appropriately reported via Sentry.
  • Establish medical records for all new admissions to the facility; acquire, monitor, and account for the medical records which accompany those patients transferred in from other BOP institutions.
  • Perform a full range of administrative duties, including preparing reports, purchase orders, receiving reports, pay vouchers, quarterly and annual reports, medical referrals for treatment to other BOP facilities, and pre-certification requests.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is Required.
  • Selective Service Requirement: Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP).
  • Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service.
  • Applicants must possess administrative and technical support experience in order to provide effective management, maintenance, and control of the medical department's records and files.
