Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Records Technician to join our team at the Justice, Bureau of Prisons/Federal Prison System. As a Medical Records Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date medical records for inmates, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and providing excellent customer service to healthcare staff and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze medical records for completeness, consistency, and compliance with Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Bureau of Prisons (BOP) requirements.
  • Perform monthly medical record audits in coordination with the medical staff.
  • Process requests for medical information from outside hospitals, clinics, and physicians.
  • Respond to requests from outside sources requesting release of BOP medical information, including court orders and requests by U.S. Attorneys.
  • Coding, using ICD-9-CM, complicated diagnoses and procedures for discharged inmates.
  • Establish medical records for all new admissions to the facility.
  • Perform a full range of administrative duties, including preparing reports, purchase orders, receiving reports, pay vouchers, quarterly and annual reports, medical referrals for treatment to other BOP facilities, and pre-certification requests.

  • Qualifications: GL-05: Successfully completed 4 years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. GL-07: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GL-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
