Job Summary

The Academic and Non-Academic Coordinators of interpreting services play a crucial role in coordinating the provision of interpreting services within their respective areas of responsibility. They provide model interpreting services in a broad range of challenging assignments and lead professional development and projects at both the team and department level.

Key Responsibilities
  • Screen requests for compliance with RIT practices and work with freelance interpreters to provide approximately 18,500 hours of service each academic year.
  • Facilitate collaboration between consumers and interpreters, finding the most appropriate fit between interpreters, assignments, and consumers.
  • Coordinate and schedule services for a team of staff, working constantly with their team and other coordinators/teams and local and distant freelance agencies to piece together coverage in a dynamic environment.
  • Carry an interpreting load of approximately 500 hours per year, in addition to coordinating and scheduling an average of nearly 450 hours each semester.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as an interpreter, preferably in a postsecondary setting.
  • Must assess at Level 3 Interpreter on the DAS proficiency level.
  • Must possess sophisticated and in-depth understanding of Access Service requirements at a large comprehensive university with large numbers of diverse deaf and hard of hearing students and faculty.

  • Knowledge of the large, diverse, deaf and hard of hearing community.
  • Respect for diversity of needs and settings to be served AND experience in provision of interpreting in a broad variety of settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of role and function in postsecondary interpreting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Code of Professional Conduct of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and appreciation of multiple styles of workplace communication.
  • Big picture understanding of the provision of access services.
  • Collaborative, progressive, innovative mindset; appreciation of the value of all team members.
  • Strong analytical skills and quantitative abilities.
  • Understanding of university organization and resources.
  • Strong communication abilities, written, spoken, and signed.
  • Perseverance and strong work ethic.
  • Generosity in sharing expertise and a strong interest in developing others.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic skills using email and communication systems, Kronos or other online timekeeping system.
