Position Levels:

Social Services Eligibility Specialist I is the entry-level position within this occupational group, where employees operate under close supervision while acquiring the necessary skills to assess eligibility for various government assistance programs. Following successful completion of training and upon supervisor recommendation, employees may advance to the full-performance level.

Social Services Eligibility Specialist II represents the advanced level in this occupational group. Responsibilities include determining and reassessing eligibility for financial assistance, food stamps, medical aid, and other social service programs. While the work adheres to established policies and guidelines, independent judgment is required for certain eligibility evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct interviews to assess eligibility for assistance and re-evaluate ongoing eligibility;
  • Clarify the nature of temporary assistance programs and identify clients' needs;
  • Process applications for financial aid and diversion, explaining client responsibilities and program details;
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of collected data;
  • Calculate assistance plans;
  • Assess the need for special allowances;
  • Evaluate social factors such as education and work experience;
  • Analyze clients' employability and explore potential income sources.

Minimum Qualifications:

Some knowledge of basic human behavior, mathematics for problem-solving, and interviewing techniques is required.

Skills in operating a personal computer and relevant software are essential.

Demonstrated Abilities:

Effective communication skills, both oral and written; ability to gather information and evaluate situations; analytical skills; sound judgment; and maintaining confidentiality are crucial. Candidates should also be adept at using technology for case management and data retrieval.

A high school diploma with additional training or relevant experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

A degree or coursework in Human Services, experience in a Local Department of Social Services, and familiarity with public assistance processing are preferred.

Special Requirements:

All applicants will undergo a DMV driving record check, pre-employment drug screening, and background checks. Candidates must be prepared to work in community emergency response situations if necessary.
