Job Description

Position Overview: The Cloud Migration Systems Specialist will play a pivotal role in facilitating the transition of on-premises systems to the AWS cloud environment. This position is essential for bolstering the organization's security and management capabilities by migrating internal systems into AWS, which aligns with the agency's Zero Trust Architecture. The ideal candidate will work closely with development teams to pinpoint systems for migration, formulate migration and testing strategies, supervise the migration process, and liaise with owners of externally hosted systems to promote similar transitions.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assessment of Migration Candidates:
    • Perform a comprehensive evaluation of existing on-premises applications to identify systems that are prime candidates for cloud migration.
    • Examine each system's requirements, dependencies, and potential obstacles to assess the viability of migration.
  2. Selection of Cloud Deployment Model:
    • Collaborate with development teams to ascertain the most suitable cloud deployment model (e.g., IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) for each identified system, taking into account performance, scalability, and cost considerations.
    • Assess and recommend cloud services and tools that meet operational requirements and security standards.
  3. Creation of Implementation & Testing Plans:
    • Develop comprehensive implementation and testing plans for each identified system, detailing the necessary steps for a successful migration to AWS.
    • Ensure that the plans encompass rigorous testing protocols to validate the performance, security, and integration of each system within the AWS environment.
  4. Oversight and Execution of Migration:
    • Lead and manage the migration of selected on-premises applications to the AWS cloud, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
    • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders to guarantee that each migration is fully integrated with Zero Trust Architecture, upholding the highest security standards.
    • Monitor the migration process, address issues as they arise, and implement corrective measures as necessary.
  5. Engagement with Externally Hosted Systems:
    • Collaborate with owners of externally hosted systems to evaluate their current infrastructure and encourage migration to AWS.
    • Provide guidance and support to owners of externally hosted systems in planning and executing their migrations, ensuring alignment with cloud strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • At least 8 years of experience in IT infrastructure, cloud computing, or systems engineering, with a focus on cloud migration initiatives.
    • Demonstrated experience in migrating on-premises systems to cloud environments, particularly AWS.
  • Technical Skills:
    • In-depth understanding of cloud computing principles, AWS services, and cloud deployment models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
    • Proficiency in cloud migration tools and methodologies, including AWS Migration Hub, AWS Server Migration Service, and AWS Database Migration Service.
    • Familiarity with Zero Trust Architecture and its application in cloud environments.
  • Certifications: AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, or other relevant cloud certifications are highly desirable.
