Position Overview:

The Principal Engineer within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) at The Universities at Shady Grove is a key individual contributor responsible for the technical planning and comprehensive architecture development for distributed cloud computing systems.

Role Responsibilities:

This position is pivotal in providing technical leadership, establishing the architectural direction, standards, and design automation for both cloud and on-premises environments. The Principal Engineer will:

1. Create, assess, and implement strategic plans and design proposals for impactful cloud-integrated enterprise solutions.
2. Lead and contribute to designs that encompass all facets of business systems and infrastructure prototypes, ensuring successful implementation.
3. Monitor and analyze cloud expenditure, developing shared reporting methods to optimize costs.
4. Engage in comprehensive problem-solving and technical analysis, mentoring team members across various disciplines.

Essential Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Experience:
A minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience in managing and supporting IT infrastructure operations.

Skills and Expertise:
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, adaptable to diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to prioritize and execute advanced support requests independently.
- Proficient in managing IT projects with a focus on delivering technical initiatives.
- Strong decision-making capabilities, fostering consensus among stakeholders.
- Experience in leading presentations and training sessions for large groups.
- Demonstrated expertise in rapidly learning new technologies, becoming a subject matter expert.
- Ability to analyze business requirements and assess technology options for high-level solutions.
- Familiarity with office productivity tools such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces.
- Subject matter expertise in at least three (3) technical areas, including Azure Synapse, Data Factory, and Data Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience in architecting cloud-native solutions and understanding cloud security best practices.
- Five or more years in roles such as Solution Architect or Principal Engineer, with specific experience in Microsoft Azure services related to data analytics.
- Familiarity with modern data integration techniques to ensure data consistency and availability.
