Director of Philanthropy Job Summary

Defenders of Wildlife seeks a seasoned Director of Philanthropy to lead our major gifts efforts and cultivate strategic partnerships. This key role will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to drive revenue growth and support our mission to protect wildlife and their habitats.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute a major gifts strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit high-level donors and prospects
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including senior management, program staff, and Board members
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Philanthropy and Vice President of Philanthropy to set fundraising goals and develop multi-year strategies
  • Prepare progress reports and funding proposals for select donors
  • Work with volunteer hosts, Development staff, and regional staff to coordinate donor cultivation events and field trips
  • Engage and support senior management, program staff, and Board members in executing donor strategies
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in a related field
  • 10 years of relevant experience, including 5 years of supervisory experience and 5+ years of experience in major gift donor cultivation and solicitation
  • Demonstrated success in developing substantive donor relationships and supporting senior management, program staff, and high-level volunteers in executing donor strategies
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills with the ability to function independently and as part of a team
