Position Overview:


The role entails working autonomously within the technical domains of Washington University and its affiliated organizations, focusing on radiation safety and compliance.

Responsibilities include managing radioactive materials, radiation sources, and radiation-generating devices, as well as overseeing radioactive and hazardous waste, high-field magnets, and lasers.

This position necessitates a thorough understanding of radiation protection principles and the methodologies required to adhere to relevant regulations.

The candidate must possess the capability to assess information, recognize requirements, and effectively communicate with stakeholders to gather further details.

A comprehensive technical knowledge base concerning radiation utilization, regulatory mandates, radiation safety technologies, and compliance with NRC broad-scope licenses is essential.

Contributions to the development of procedures and programs within the radiation safety framework are expected, with specific assignments potentially concentrated in designated technical areas.

Strong technical expertise, the ability to enhance the radiation safety program, experience in interpreting regulatory guidelines, and adept problem-solving skills for incident evaluation are critical.

Leadership skills to manage and guide personnel, along with the ability to oversee physical resources in various technical sectors to achieve project objectives, are required.

Effective interaction with diverse individuals and the capacity to convey technical information clearly and succinctly are paramount.

This position supports the promotion of radioactivity usage within a secure work environment, participates in the management of the radiation safety program, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervises and manages a team of Radiation Safety Specialists and Health Physicists at various levels.

May oversee staff training, professional growth, career development, and performance evaluations, along with providing technical guidance and recommendations for salary adjustments.

Coordinates assignments related to various technical aspects of the radiation safety program.

Technical Areas of Focus:

User authorizations for clinical and research applications, laboratory inspections, technical assessments, monitoring, and data evaluation; compliance audits; records management; procedures development; incident investigations; and radiation safety program development.

Manages project tasks requiring planning, resource scheduling, and progress communication with management; identifies and resolves issues in collaboration with users and management; compiles reports and coordinates waste management.

Responds to radiation incidents and emergencies, providing initial response and decontamination support; prepares incident reports and conducts investigations.

Oversees training initiatives, waste management compliance, and laser and magnet safety programs.

Assists with regulatory compliance and license amendments as needed.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated analytical reasoning and mathematical computation skills.
Experience with NRC or Agreement State broad-scope medical-use licenses.
Certification in relevant fields is advantageous.
Ability to effectively manage technical areas of the radiation safety program, including budget and schedule oversight.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a relevant field with extensive experience in radiation safety compliance, including project management and supervisory roles.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications.

Salary Range:
$96,000 - $169,300.00 / Annually
