About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Therapist to join our team at the Cedar Rapids Community School District. As a key member of our Student Support Services team, you will play a vital role in providing mental health services to students and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide diagnostic assessments and evaluations for students with behavior challenges that impact their academic success.
  • Collaborate with school personnel to identify and understand variables affecting student performance, including mental illness, trauma, and Adverse Childhood Experiences.
  • Coordinate therapy services and referrals with school nurses and community service providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Assess and de-escalate crisis situations, including suicide ideation and homicidal ideation.
  • Deliver services on-site as needed and provide individual and group counseling.
  • Support groups and parent education for families as needed.
  • Participate in direct observation of children in the classroom and provide 1:1 interventions as necessary.
  • Assist school personnel and families in identifying issues impeding student success and create individual behavior plans.
  • Promote services to students and families within a multicultural understanding and competence framework.
  • Consult on issues such as attendance, confidentiality, ethnicity, and diversity.
Requirements
  • Masters degree in mental health counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Appropriate professional licensure to practice in the State of Iowa, such as LISW or LMHT.
  • Minimum of two years experience assessing children's mental health needs and developing/implementing plans, preferably in a school setting.
  • Demonstrated successful cross-sector collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team to coordinate care for individual students.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with school staff, community service providers, students, and families to achieve successful outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid School Psychologist license/certificate.
  • Experience working with students and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to advocate for students in accessing needed resources.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
