KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Assistant City Electrician and the City Electrician, the following responsibilities are to be carried out:

  • Conducts a variety of electrical tasks as required, including maintenance of electrical systems, repair of street lighting, and upkeep of municipal fire alarm systems, fiber optic networks, emergency communication devices, interior fire alarms, and security systems.
  • Oversees the Citywide Centrex Telephone System, which encompasses approximately 1000 telephone lines along with associated instruments and equipment.
  • Reviews and approves invoices from vendors for telephone services, ensuring accurate payment processing.
  • Generates invoices for City departments for chargeable services related to the installation and maintenance of the Citywide Centrex Telephone System.
  • Procures electrical and communication equipment for the department and other relevant entities as necessary.
  • Participates in meetings as required on various topics.
  • Provides supervision to department staff as needed.
  • Engages in a 24-hour on-call rotation, responding to emergencies during off-hours as necessary.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts State Electrical Code.
  • Understanding of municipal signal systems, fiber optic networks, local network cabling, and fire and security building systems.
  • Knowledge of telephone systems, including PBX and Centrex configurations.
  • Capability to operate a bucket truck, climb ladders, and utilize personnel lifts.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Massachusetts State Electricians License.
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License (CDL Class B).
  • Valid Massachusetts Hoisting Class 1B certification.
  • Certification in OSHA 10 Step Safety and Health Training Course or the ability to obtain it within six months of appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The role involves physical activities such as lifting, stretching, walking, bending, squatting, and reaching. Work settings include professional office environments as well as outdoor locations such as city roadways, parks, athletic fields, and construction sites in various weather conditions.
