Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of professional experience in the broadcast news sector (radio or television) is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the local news landscape is preferred, along with excellent news judgment and awareness of current events on local, national, and international levels.

  • Ability to work efficiently, manage multiple tasks, and maintain composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities are required.
  • Proficient writing and interviewing skills are necessary.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Audition, Burli, and Wide Orbit is preferred.
  • Timeliness is crucial; candidates must be available for weekdays and weekends, including early morning, midday, evening, and overnight shifts.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor are expected.

Job Overview

WTOP produces a 24/7 live audio news service. The Associate Producer collaborates closely with WTOP's producers, anchors, writers, reporters, and digital team to create engaging and factually accurate newscasts. This role encompasses newsgathering and quality assurance responsibilities. The Associate Producer and Audio Producer work collectively to position WTOP News as the premier source of local and relevant news for the Washington, DC area.

Job Responsibilities
  • Effectively coordinate and communicate with anchors, writers, reporters, broadcast producers, and the digital team to deliver news with urgency around the clock.
  • Ensure anchors have all necessary materials for seamless broadcasts, including scripts and audio files.
  • Continuously monitor producers' hourly newscasts and review all audio and scripts to uphold WTOP's quality standards.
  • Write news articles and edit audio files, ensuring accuracy and balance in broadcast news copy, which must be clear, compelling, and produced under tight deadlines.
  • Maintain awareness of the latest local news and significant national/international stories at all times. Monitor various news outlets and social media to ensure WTOP is at the forefront of relevant and breaking news.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by responding to inquiries from listeners.
  • Actively seek news tips received through official channels.
  • Schedule interviews with key news figures and sources to discuss top stories live on-air.
  • Engage with affiliates and news sources for interviews and information.
  • Additional responsibilities for the Audio Producer include:
    • Utilizing Adobe Audition to adjust audio levels to meet WTOP's quality standards.
    • Ensuring all audio reports are free from poor sound quality, grammatical errors, and other inaccuracies.
    • Monitoring television newscasts and other sources for stories not already covered.
    • Assisting the producer and associate producer as needed.
    • Performing other assigned duties.
