Nature of Work

The City of Bellingham is seeking applications for part-time, non-benefited positions as Aquatic Center Cashiers. This is an ongoing recruitment to address current and future staffing requirements throughout the year.

Aquatic Center Cashiers are responsible for welcoming visitors and providing essential information regarding admission fees and program schedules. Key responsibilities include collecting admissions, processing pass purchases and class registrations, and addressing inquiries about facilities, pool hours, and class schedules both in person and via a multi-line telephone system.

Position Details:

This role commences at Step 1 ($17.28/hour), with employees eligible for step increases upon completing 2080 hours in accordance with City policy. The current salary range for this position is $17.28/hour - $19.88/hour.

In a regular non-benefited position with the City of Bellingham, employees may work up to 69 hours per calendar month and can flex up to full-time for a maximum of four months each calendar year.

City of Bellingham employees have access to an employee assistance program. This position does not offer benefits, except as mandated by law. Employees are entitled to accrue 1 hour of Washington State paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.

Essential Functions:
  1. Collect admissions using a computerized system; process purchases of passes and class registrations.
  2. Maintain cash drawer, handle cash transactions with patrons, and perform reconciliation at closeout.
  3. Act as the primary receptionist, greeting patrons and providing information on admission fees, private rentals, class schedules/fees, and events at the Aquatic Center.
  4. Manage waitlists for existing or future programs and assist in marketing efforts to fill courses.
  5. Answer phone calls and route messages to appropriate staff; may also sort and route incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail.
  6. Oversee lost-and-found items, including laundering, sorting, and care of claimed or found items.
  7. May assist with pool opening and/or closing procedures, including starting the cash register and logging into the registration/reservation program in the absence of the Main Cashier.
  8. Perform data entry into the computerized registration system.
Additional Responsibilities:
  1. Carry out related duties as assigned, including basic office tasks such as typing, filing, or faxing.
  2. Assist with facility emergencies, first aid, CPR, crowd control, and clean-up efforts.
  3. Monitor restroom and locker room facilities; perform minor cleaning and restocking of supplies.
  4. During adverse weather conditions, assist with snow removal or sanding to ensure safe access to pool facilities.
  5. Participate in in-service meetings.
  6. May be assigned special projects.
  7. Perform other related duties of a similar nature or level.
Working Environment:
Work is primarily conducted in an office setting, with frequent interaction with the public both in person and by telephone. The role requires some walking on wet or slick surfaces around the pool area and occasional lifting of heavy supplies and materials.

Physical requirements include:
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods.
  • Visual acuity to read a computer screen and printed materials.
  • Fine motor skills to operate a cash register and computer keyboard.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds for office supplies and snow/sanding duties.
Experience and Training:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • One year of experience as a cashier or related experience handling money is required.
  • Six months of receptionist or customer service experience is required.
  • Six months of experience and/or training with Microsoft Office is preferred.
  • Office/clerical experience performing tasks such as filing, answering phones, and data entry/retrieval is preferred.
  • Experience with a reservation system is preferred.
Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Cashier shifts are scheduled between 5:30 am and 9:00 pm, Sunday through Saturday. Employees typically work 3-15 hours per week.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a criminal convictions check, child and adult abuse records check, and local background check.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid Certification within three months of hire.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible and/or additional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
