Nature of Work

The City of Bellingham is seeking applications for part-time, non-benefited positions as Aquatic Center Cashiers. This is an ongoing recruitment to address current and future staffing requirements throughout the year.
Cashiers at the Aquatic Center are responsible for welcoming patrons and providing essential information about admission fees and program schedules. They will handle the collection of admissions, process the sale of passes and class registrations, and respond to inquiries regarding facilities, pool hours, and class schedules both in person and via a multi-line telephone system.

Compensation: This role commences at Step 1 ($17.28/hour), with step increases available upon completion of 2080 hours in accordance with City policy. The salary range for this position is $17.28/hour - $19.88/hour.

In a regular non-benefited role with the City of Bellingham, employees may work up to 69 hours per calendar month and can flex up to full-time for a maximum of four months each calendar year.

Employees have access to an employee assistance program, although this position does not qualify for benefits, except as mandated by law. Employees are eligible to accrue 1 hour of Washington State paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Collect admissions utilizing a computer program; process the sale of passes and class registrations.
  2. Manage cash drawer, ensuring accurate cash exchanges with patrons and performing reconciliation at closeout.
  3. Serve as the primary receptionist, greeting patrons and providing information on admission fees, private rentals, class schedules/fees, and events at the Aquatic Center.
  4. Maintain waitlists for existing or future programs and assist in marketing efforts to fill courses.
  5. Answer phone calls and route messages to appropriate staff; may sort and route incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail.
  6. Oversee lost-and-found items, including laundering, sorting, and care of claimed or found belongings.
  7. May assist with pool opening and/or closing procedures, including starting the cash register and logging into the registration/reservation program in the absence of the main cashier.
  8. Perform data entry into the computerized registration system.
Additional Duties:
  1. Carry out related tasks as assigned, including basic office work such as typing, filing, or faxing.
  2. Assist with facility emergencies, first aid, CPR, crowd control, and clean-up.
  3. Monitor restroom and locker room facilities; perform minor cleaning and restocking of supplies.
  4. During adverse weather conditions, assist with snow removal or sanding to ensure safe access to pool facilities.
  5. Participate in in-service meetings.
  6. May be assigned special projects.
  7. Perform other related duties of a similar nature or level.
Working Environment:
Work is primarily conducted in an office setting, with frequent public interaction both in person and by phone. The role requires walking on wet or slick surfaces around the pool area and occasionally lifting heavy supplies and materials.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Visual acuity to read a computer screen and printed materials.
  • Fine motor skills to operate a cash register and computer equipment.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds for office supplies and snow/sanding duties.
Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • One year of experience as a cashier or in a related role handling money is required.
  • Six months of receptionist or customer service experience is required.
  • Six months of experience and/or training with Microsoft Office is preferred.
  • Office/clerical experience performing tasks such as filing, answering phones, and data entry is preferred.
  • Experience with a reservation system is preferred.
Special Requirements:

Cashier shifts are scheduled between the hours of 5:30 am and 9:00 pm, Sunday through Saturday. Employees typically work 3-15 hours per week.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a criminal background check, child and adult abuse records check, and local background check.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid Certification within three months of hire.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible and/or additional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Selection Process:
