Structures Assembly Technician

2 weeks ago

Marietta, Georgia, United States Lockheed Martin Corporation Full time

Job Overview

The Structures Assembly Technician is responsible for constructing and assembling structural components where coordination is essential. Utilizing established tooling and primary locations, the technician will accurately lay out and identify rivet, bolt, and fastener hole patterns through basic measurement techniques.

The role involves executing assembly in the correct order, loading jigs, and performing necessary work or rework to finalize the assembly, whether in the jig or after removal.

Key tasks include minor reforming of parts to achieve the correct shape, crimping, trimming, and filing components for proper fit, as well as framing, skinning, riveting, and attaching necessary fittings and installations to achieve a complete assembly.

Drilling and reaming will be performed to specified tolerances, with rivet milling as required. The technician may also create shop aids to enhance assembly and installation processes.

Routine installation tasks will involve bolting, screwing, clipping, or riveting to attach or position electrical, hydraulic, plumbing, or mechanical units, where placement is determined by pilot holes, back drilling, templates, or previously punched holes. Simple measurements from reference points such as edges or installed units will also be utilized.

Torque and secure bolts as necessary, and when required by assembly sequence, install incidental plumbing, electrical rigging, or other functional items.

Typical installations include:

  1. Braces, brackets, platenuts, and clips for fastening or supporting installations;
  2. Conduit, junction boxes, instrument panels, and wire harnesses, requiring cutting and lugging but not soldering;
  3. Tubing for hydraulic, plumbing, and air conditioning systems;
  4. Cables, drums, pulley assemblies, and linkage;
  5. Mechanical units such as tracks, hinges, and locks;
  6. Sealing compounds, insulation, gaskets, and other materials for aircraft parts;
  7. Floor supports, boards, and similar items;
  8. Miscellaneous items like fuel tanks, cabinets, and storage equipment.

The technician will also disassemble and reassemble structures and installations, returning units to their original positions or previously established locations.

Fabrication of structural items such as clips, angles, and patches will be required.

Essential knowledge of aircraft assembly and installation practices, as well as familiarity with aircraft materials, is necessary. Proficiency in using jigs, fixtures, assembly equipment, and hand tools is expected.

Ability to read and interpret detail, assembly, and installation blueprints is crucial for obtaining assembly information and material specifications. The technician should be comfortable using measuring devices and performing arithmetic calculations.

**Basic Qualifications**

Two years of experience in aircraft sheet metal assembly, including riveted structures and installation of functional or electrical components, or equivalent training. Candidates should possess the ability to drill and rivet thin sheet metal and interpret aircraft detail and assembly blueprints.

**Desired Skills**

Aerospace and Defense structural assembly experience is preferred, along with:

  • Basic to advanced blueprint reading skills;
  • Experience using drill blocks;
  • Ability to drill holes through thick materials.
