Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Academic Achievement Counselor to join our team at the University of California, Davis. As a key member of our undergraduate retention team, you will play a critical role in supporting student success and retention for a cohort of students experiencing academic difficulty or predictive indicators of poor academic performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive and wide-ranging academic advising and support for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering.
  • Serve as an expert resource for and provide leadership to departmental academic advisors on policy implementation guidelines.
  • Collaborate closely with personnel in other campus units to ensure ongoing, individual, and holistic advising for students.
  • Interpret and apply complex Academic Senate, college, and campus academic and administrative regulations and policies associated with undergraduate education and advising.
  • Make decisions under the direction of the Associate Dean on academic intervention, dismissal, and readmission, and in consultation with the Associate Dean, the Director of Advising and Policy, and college faculty, on course planning and scheduling.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in a STEM field, academic advising, counseling, higher education leadership, student services, or a related field.
  • Experience advising students in a university setting.
  • Experience identifying and determining appropriate levels of advising or referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, triage, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.
  • Experience with computer software for word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Knowledge of diverse cultural backgrounds and sensitivity to social, educational, and cultural needs and concerns of students from first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, or non-traditional backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal communication skills, and political acumen to build and maintain professional collaborative working relationships.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience identifying and documenting patterns of student academic needs and developing strategies and programs to meet those needs.
  • Experience using data analysis tools to review, refine, recommend, and support student success.
  • Experience advising students regarding academic courses, programs, curriculum, major and college requirements, educational alternatives, petitions, and certifications.
  • Experience using online tools and advising systems such as BANNER, College Source, and Degree Navigator.
