Job Summary:

UPMC Life Changing Medicine is seeking a skilled Radiology Support Specialist to provide exceptional support to our radiology team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our radiology department, providing excellent patient care, and maintaining accurate records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comply with established occupational health and safety policies to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Distribute daily schedules and ensure that all necessary information is available to radiologists and other staff members.
  • Retrieve and digitize mammography folders, updating patient jackets with color-coded stickers as needed.
  • Separate and distribute radiology reports according to departmental policies.
  • Ensure that all previous mammography and breast ultrasound images are available for radiologists' interpretation before patient examinations.
  • Direct patients to dressing rooms, provide hospital gowns, and inform them of what to do with their clothing and valuables.
  • Scan signed authorizations for the release of information forms into the radiology information system and make copies or fax reports as requested.
  • Ensure that waiting rooms and changing areas are clean and well-maintained, with ample supplies of clean linens.
  • Greets patients, directs them to waiting areas, and informs them of any delays or cancellations.
  • Enter patients into the department via computer system, verify order information, and scan physician orders into the radiology information system.
  • Relay prep instructions to patients as needed.
  • Answer telephones, take and deliver messages, and relay routine information to physicians, technologists, patients, and hospital personnel.
  • Research computer files to determine the date of the last exam for each new patient.
  • Utilize hospital PACS to retrieve patient images, print films, or burn CDs for transport to other departments or locations.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of a medical terminology course is preferred.
  • Graduate of a medical secretarial program is preferred.
  • Previous experience as a medical secretary in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Must be detail-oriented, personable, and able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer systems and efficiency in keyboard operation is required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34 clearance required.
