Role Overview:

In the capacity of a Senior Battery Test Engineer, you will play a pivotal role within the battery testing team, focusing on the evaluation and execution of both current and future high voltage battery systems. This position involves close collaboration with validation and design engineers to formulate and implement testing strategies and timelines. You will operate in a cutting-edge battery laboratory, where your ingenuity will be essential in crafting and executing testing methodologies. This role encompasses Battery Management System (BMS) testing and necessitates collaboration with various teams across Rivian.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the technical authority, guiding laboratory personnel (both internal and external) in the setup and execution of tests on lithium-ion battery systems, covering aspects such as electrical, thermal, humidity, internal protection, and corrosion.
  • Assist in-house BMS testing for various current and upcoming battery initiatives.
  • Initiate the design of testing protocols and validation assessments, driving the creation of comprehensive test outlines and methodologies for high voltage battery systems and battery pack components.
  • Conduct and uphold testing on high voltage battery systems, adhering to established procedures and test plans.
  • Deliver in-depth data analysis derived from testing activities.
  • Provide insights regarding battery failure modes identified during testing to Validation, Design, and Manufacturing Engineers.
  • Advocate for safety concerns and ensure proper actions are taken for resolution.
  • Engage in Bill of Design assessments, including CTS, DFMEA, PFMEA, DVP&R, CTR, etc.
  • Support technical root cause analysis and resolution of issues encountered during testing.
  • Assist with hardware integration, addressing interfacing hardware and connection challenges.
  • Design and modify testing fixtures and instrumentation for battery evaluations.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance technical documentation, templates, and tracking systems for Bill of Design, Bill of Materials, CTS, CTR, DFMEA, ADV Toolbox, Drawing Templates, and Lessons Learned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in the automotive or battery sector.
  • Proficient in High Voltage Battery Testing, including battery cycling and performance evaluation, particularly with lithium-ion chemistries.
  • Preferred expertise in BMS Testing.
  • Familiarity with automotive testing tools such as Vector CANalyzer, CANoe, CANape, ECU-Test, and Vehicle SPI is advantageous.
  • Experience with battery cycling test equipment (NHR, Lynx).
  • Understanding of high voltage systems, stored energy, FMVSS, and battery safety protocols.
  • Expertise in instrumentation, including thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, pressure gauges, flow meters, and data loggers.
  • Ability to consolidate and analyze large datasets to interpret test outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic software scripting.
  • High energy, self-motivated, and willing to travel domestically and/or internationally as required.
